Round 2 - Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit - 28th March 2010

All the chatter in the build up has been what a disappointment F1 2010 is. Well Bahrain anyway. Oh and Adrian Newey designing fragile cars, or something :)

Robert Kubica finished the first practice session fastest, but eyes were on BMW Sauber, and Kamui Koboyashi who suffered two front wing failures. Paul di Resta got his first taste of a F1 weekend, he took Sutil's car for the opening session in which he finished 11th fastest.

The second practice was disrupted due to rain, and it was the McLaren duo who chose the right time to be on track. Hamilton finished fastest 0.275 ahead of Button. It was a tough afternoon at the other end of the pitlane, Virgin's di Grassi and HRT's Chandhok failing to put in any laps, and Bruno Senna could only manage a single tour.

Webber pleased his home crowd by topping the time-sheets in the third session.

Red Bull locked out the front row, with Sebastian Vettel stealing the spoils from Webber, just as the Australian did at the German's home race last year. Under two tenths separated the top three, with Alonso in third, who were the class of the field, with Button over half a second adrift of the Spaniard in 4th. Biggest surprise is Lewis Hamilton who was unable to progress from Q2 in the MP4-25.

Jenson Button in his second start for McLaren took the chequered flag in a show of decisiveness that set apart from his younger team-mate. The race started on a damp - but drying - track and Button was the first to make the switch from intermediates to slicks.

Robert Kubica bagged an impressive 2nd place, from 9th on the grid, as the pole reacted best to the first corner collision.

Jenson Button made a move up the inside of Alonso, however the Spaniard not seeing the McLaren turned in onto the Brit. The result was a spin for Alonso relegating him to the rear of the pack, and Michael Schumacher who also got tangled up in it requiring a new front wing.

Alonso battled through the midfield and finished 4th, just behind his team-mate Felipe Massa. However seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher couldn't make the same progress. He found himself unable to pass Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso for 20 laps, but eventually did make it through into 10th for the final championship point at the end.

Sebastain Vettel had been comfortably leading the race until for the second race on the trot reliability gremlins took it away from him. This time the German's front-left wheel was the cause.

Mark Webber floundered at his home event, making a number of driver errors most significant which was taking Lewis Hamilton off at turn 13 only a few laps from home. It cost the Aussie 6th place, but luckily Hamilton was able to continue albeit losing a place to Rosberg who finished 5th.
