2008 Formula 1 World Championship

2008 - Hamilton Pips Massa To The Title

The 2008 Season once again saw Ferrari & McLaren locked in a fight for both the Drivers & Constructors Championships. Defending Champion Kimi Raikkonen remained with Ferrari, but would endure a disappointing season. Alonso after a torrid season at McLaren returned to his old team Renault and was replaced at McLaren by Hekki Kovalainen. Lewis Hamilton would hope to do one better than last year and amend his mistakes by winning the Driver’s title. Massa would step out of Michael Schumacher’s shadow and become Ferrari’s main title challenger.

2008 also yielded the youngest ever race winner in the form of Sebastian Vettel as well as the first win for the Toro Rosso team. Fernando Alonso would also claim 2 fine victories in the later stages of the season. BMW after a strong 2007 season went onto cement their position as the third top team in F1, with a fine maiden win for Kubica & BMW at the Canadian GP.

The season is also of note due to several bizarre and at times controversial decisions made by the race Stewards, which affected more than just one race result! In the end it was a final show down at the Brazilian GP that was left to the final corner of the final lap to decide the 2008 champion. Lewis Hamilton won his first title, but Ferrari managed to claim yet another Constructors title, setting the scene nicely going into 2009.
