  • 'Luscious Liz' takes Vettel to P1

Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel sensationally took pole position for the first race of 2010 in Bahrain. The German sneaked ahead of favourites Ferrari who lined up 2nd and 3rd with Felipe Massa ahead of Fernando Alonso.

Bahrain also marked the first competitive session of Lotus, Hispania and Virgin. For the full qualifying result check the 2010 Bahrain Grid.

    Surprise of Qualifying

A great surprise was seeing Karun Chandhok taking part in qualifying. I think he did an amazing job, considering he had never driven that car before, its not even set up for Bahrain and he manages to set a time that’s within a couple of seconds of Senna is very impressive indeed. So far it certainly has been a baptism by fire for Karun!

A solid drive from both Kubica and Liuzzi see them in the top 10 and certainly the first blood has to go to Renault in the battle outside of the championship hunt.

    Disappointment of Qualifying

The disappointment of qualifying has to be McLaren and in particular Jenson Button. The reigning World Champion looked to be struggling even in Q2 and only barely made it into the pole position shoot out! Jenson seemed quite happy with his performance and the car in post race comments, which seems hard to believe. If it were me, I would not want to be slowest of the top 8 title contenders!

The McLaren’s looked to be nearly 2 seconds off the pace in Q3. Although Hamilton did salvage 4th, beating Jenson quite comfortably, the team will have to question the gap to the front-runners.

Another disappointment for me was Sauber; I was expecting a lot more from them than 14th and 16th!

    Prediction for the Race

I have to admit the Ferraris look good, I have a feeling that one of the red cars might just sneak the win. But I wouldn’t bet against Vettel; he has always been fantastic from pole.

I’m going to go with Vettel for the win, with one of the Ferraris on the podium. My sneaky outsider for the other podium slot is going to Rosberg. He did a solid job in qualifying even if he seems a bit disappointed afterwards; I think he’ll translate that into a great drive.

However that first corner will be crucial. How many times over the years have we seen a coming together at Turn 1 - lap 1? The odds are on for it happening again this year and that could dramatically redefine the race.

Being in a Banter Wars mood, my hope is that the field will all come together at Turn 1, Karun will emerge unscathed and trundle his way to victory. Perfect! What? Can’t a guy have a dream….

…bring on the first race, I’m so excited I may not sleep now!
