Petrov began his racing career not in carting as most other drivers have, but instead began racing in the Russian Lada Cup. He dominated the sport in 2002 amassing the maximum number of points possible. 2003 saw him move up to Formula Renault and eventually in 2006 he compete in the Euroseries 3000, after a brief return to the Lada series in 2004 & 2005.
Midway through 2006 Petrov made his GP2 debut, replacing the dropped Olivier Pla at David Price Racing. 2007 saw him move to Campos and claim his first race win in Valencia. He remained with the team through to the end of 2009, where he finished runner up to Nico Hulkenberg, winning in both Turkey and Valencia.
Debut & Renault (2010)
Petrov was in the ascendancy and rumours had him linked with several different teams for a drive in F1 for 2010. Eventually, former World Champion’s Renault signed him, making him the first ever Russian to compete in F1. He would partner polish sensation Robert Kubica.
