Debut & Jordan (2002)
Takuma Sato entered F1 in 2002, when he was paired with Giancarlo Fisichella at Jordan. However the team struggled and Sato's only points of the season came in his home Grand Prix where he took 5th.
Takuma followed Honda to British American Racing (BAR) for 2003, however only as test driver. He did replace Jacques Villeneuve for the final race of the season - Japan, and he finished 6th. For 2004 he got a full race seat, and BAR fielded a much more competitive car. Whilst being consistently outperformed by his team mate Jenson Button, Takuma scored a string of points scoring positions best of which was a 3rd place at the United States Grand Prix, althogther he chalked up 34 points, which secured him 8th in the drivers championship.
2005 was a stark contrast to 2004, BAR struggled at the opening races, and were then disqualified for three races due to fielding an underweight car. Takuma didnt get back on top of things after then, he only managed to score a single point all season - at the Hungarian Grand Prix - to Button's 37.
Super Aguri (2006-2008)
Sato joined the new Super Aguri team in 2006, however with only an updated 4-year-old Arrows chassis and a Honda engine bolted on, expectations weren't high. His (and the teams) best position all seasn was 10th at the final round in Brazil.
2007 was much better for the Super Aguri team, and Takuma scored their first points in F1. He took 8th in the Spanish Grand Prix, and then a stunning drive in Canada (notably overtaking the reigning world champion Fernando Alonso) and despite a botched pit stop finished 6th.
Sato and Super Aguri weren't able to match those performances again, and the team struggled to find enough money to keep the operation going.
They only competed in the first 4 rounds of the 2008 season, closing the doors after sponsorship falling through, and support from Honda waning.
Sato took part in several tests with the Toro Rosso team late in 2008, however Sebastien Bourdais was favored for the only vacant seat following Sebastien Buemi's confirmation at the team.
