Debut & Benetton (1994)
Jos got his Formula One breakthrough in 1994 when he signed for the Benetton team as test driver. Due to an accident in testing that sidelined J.J. Lehto, he started the first two rounds of the season. Lehto retook the seat for the next four races, however after disappointing results Jos again replaced him.
In that opening season he scored two 3rd places in Hungary and Belgium, and a 5th in Portugal. However in a bid to win the constructors championship the team brought Johnny Herbert into the seat for the final two rounds.
He signed up for the Simtek team in 1995 however just 5 races into the season the team went into liquidation. For the rest of the year he tested for Benetton and Ligier.
1996 saw Jos at Footwork where he scored a single point for 6th in the Argentine Grand Prix.
Tyrrell & Stewart (1997-1998)
He moved on to Tyrrell in '97, however both him and his teammate Mika Salo were dropped at the end of the year as the team was bought by British American Tobacco.
Stewart drafted him in mid-way through the 1998 season to replace Jan Magnussen where he partnered Rubens Barrichello.
In '99 he signed to become test driver for the Honda F1 project, however the project was aborted when the designer Harvey Postlethwaite died of a heart attack during on of the test sessions.
He returned to Footwork (although now named Arrows) and spent two years at the Milton Keynes based squad. Best results during that time where a 4th in Italy and 5th in Canada.
2002 Jos was nearly signed as test driver for Sauber, however he proved too large to fit into the car.
He was back in a racing seat in 2003 when he competed the full season alongside Justin Wilson and Nicolas Kiesa at Minardi.
Since F1 Jos has driven in A1GP and Le Mans Series.
